Multihull Central has officially become the new exclusive distributor for Outremer Catamarans in Australia, now selling all three production models including the 2013 European Boat of the Year, the Outremer 5X (59ft), plus the new Outremer 51and the new Outremer 45. 

Having just competed in the Outremer Cup near the company’s home port of La Grande Motte in the south of France, Multihull Central’s Director Brent Vaughan and Senior Sales Representative Andrew Crawford gained a detailed insight into the performance, layout configurations and construction techniques that Outremer offer on all three models, while getting to meet many loyal and enthusiastic boat owners. 

Brent Vaughan comments, “I was very impressed with the strong commitment to performance and lightweight construction the company has adopted. It’s very easy for manufacturers that start with a high performance design to get seduced into loading their boats up with creature comforts and giving into demand for volume just to appeal to a wider audience, which in tern slows the boat down and it becomes just a regular cruising cat. Outremer however have not compromised and have managed a brilliant balance between performance and modern luxury on all models by keeping weight down, yet still offering a clever and very comfortable cruising platform.” 

Outremer’s famous tiller helm position in addition to the regular wheel steering offers an incredible thrill for sailors that like to put a boat into ‘the groove’ and feel it respond directly through the rudder. Brent adds, “It was such a rush to be steering a 60ft cat at 16 knots on tiller and feel completely in control. These boats are ideal for experienced sailors that appreciate performance.” 

The production facility is located only 100 metres from the water, offering enormous convenience for the factory and customers when providing local delivery and handover. The construction of all Outremers involves resin infused foam core construction, with solid GRP to below the waterline. Optional carbon bulkheads and reinforcements to reduce the hull weight, along with optional carbon rotating rigs for those looking to optimise performance and reduce displacement. Quality control is also closely monitored with quality checks being made in each production phase.

This feeling is even more so prevalent in the USA, where our fellow Seawind distribution colleagues in Florida and California report that quality used boat stock has all but tried up with only a few old poorly maintained charter boats still remain on the market unsold.

It’s no secret the US economy has been very unstable over the past few years, however recent financial data indicates that a more promising future is hopefully not to far away, with the US stock exchange hitting an all time high recently and jobs figures also up. Our US agents indicate that confidence seems to be slowly returning to the boat buying market.

The run off effect of the US boating market for Australia is two fold. The excess of used boat stock in Florida and other parts of the US has been absorbed back into the US market as buyers are less concerned about the economy, and much of the rest have been absorbed by the Australian boating market due to the high AUD and apparently stronger economy – therefore decreasing supply of used boats now on the market. The renewed confidence has also increased new boat sales, reducing the need for boat production factories to offer discounts to fill production. As supply drops and demand increases from a market growing in confidence, the last of the bargains are being snapped up.

We have seen this recently with motivated vendors selling to customers who have spent the last two years searching, but realizing that a well priced boat in Australia is ultimately a better deal than risking a grey import.

We recently spoke to Craig McKune who recently purchased a quality used Seawind 1000 about his experience with grey imports, “I nearly purchased a Lagoon 380 overseas but pulled out after the survey report showed there was too much work to do to the boat and we were hoping to sail back to Australia,” he concludes, “After looking at so many boats, when I walked onto the marina at Multihull Central and saw the Seawind 1000 I just said, ‘this is the boat’”.

So if you are in the market for a cruising catamaran, don’t wait out for that bargain too long as you might find you don’t have a boat when the tide comes in

These industry leading results followed an intensive day of sales training during the dealer conference at Multihull Central’s waterside Sydney headquarters, where the team adopted a series of professional sales and marketing programs aimed at providing superior sales results, while ensuring customers find the most suitable catamaran for their purposes.

Following the dealer conference, the Re-opening party got into full swing, with VIP guests including customers, suppliers and contractors, enjoying a gourmet BBQ and the live music by Rio Rakoia by the waterfront, while sipping cocktails as the sunset on the Multihull Central marina and SydneyHarbour.
