Multihull Central in partnership with Southern Cross Sailing School, one of the Australia's longest established RYA sailing schools, and Moreton Bay Holidays Float, featuring the newest charter catamarans on Moreton Bay, bring together a 7 month program to you from basic or novice level of sailing experience, through to a confident offshore skipper.
The program includes:
CATAMARAN RYA COMPETENT CREW COURSE
3 x weekends training on Moreton Bay
onboard a cruising catamaran of their own
Course content: The catamaran will visit different harbours and anchorages during the trip and students will enjoy the delights of spending the night on board at anchor and sailing at night under the stars. You will learn how to set the sails, steer, and live aboard a catamaran whilst cruising. The course also covers the use of all safety equipment on board a catamaran, the rules of the road, manners and customs, and how the weather effects the planning of a sailing trip. You will participate in "man overboard" drills, but don't worry, we use a dummy, not a real person! Students are fully involved in all aspects of crewing on board the catamaran from steering to cooking in the galley. (Ladies take note there is total equality on board a Southern Cross School yacht so the guys do the cooking and cleaning to!)
CATAMARAN RYA DAY SKIPPER COURSE
3 x weekends training on Moreton Bay onboard a new Seawind 1160 LITE catamaran
A skipper does much more than navigate and steer. They are responsible for the complete safety and well being of the catamaran and crew including weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping, navigation and pilotage.
Your experienced and patient instructor will teach you these skills and you will put them into practice as you skipper the catamaran on short passages around Moreton Bay. There is particular emphasis on boat handling for Day Skippers and during the course you will practice mooring under various conditions.
Students live aboard the catamaran during the course and visit many of the beautiful harbours and anchorages that Moreton Bay has to offer to practice pilotage techniques. You will complete at least 4 hours night sailing to experience night pilotage and identify lights.
At the end of the course you will be confident to skipper a cruising yacht on short passages by day in sheltered waters. Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded the RYA Day Skipper certificate.
