The second Seawind 1600 to launch, ‘Double J’ named for John and Jaunita her proud owners, went into the water this week in Vietnam. Destined for Queensland, Australia she is first doing a 300NM shake down sail to Nha Trang where she will do some more coastal sea trials before being handed over to her owners. John and Jaunita are then sailing her back to Australia over the next few months, aiming to be in Australia towards the end of the year. Very exciting times with many people looking forward to seeing her.

In 1999 my partner, Jess, and I decided to invest in a cruising yacht to be placed in the charter fleet in the Whitsundays. After many years racing dinghies (mainly NS14s) together, we were to embark on a journey that would eventually lead us to owning and cruising a blue water capable yacht and sailing nearly 28,000 together. I had previously read about cruising catamarans so we visited the 1999 Sydney Boat Show and inspected a Seawind 1000. We fell in love and after receiving a lot of positive feedback from the charter businessw we decided that a cat would be the best way to proceed. So we chose a Seawind 1000 and lined up with a company called Tropical Sailing. The boat (#1073) was built in Wollongong by Seawind and because Tropical preferred their boats to have “Tropical” in the name (they already…

We have just returned from a month’s sailing trip to Tasmania on our Seawind 1250 – Whiskers! This was our second trip in two years having enjoyed it so much last year that we vouched to return. We left on 8th February and sailed from Martha Cove to Bicheno on the NE Coast in 4 days via Cape Woolamai, Deal Island, and Badger Island (off Flinders Island). Our total sailing time was 52 hours so we made it in good time with the weather in our favour. After 2 days in Bicheno, we sailed down the east coast of Tasmania past the scenic Freycinet Peninsula and Schouten Island. We spent a night at Riedle Bay, Maria Island then ventured further on towards Tasman Island sailing past the majestic rock cliffs of the Tasman peninsula and into Port Arthur. Sailing that day was exhilarating to…

The keenly anticipated Seawind 1260 is nearing launch, with the first boat only a few months from her debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. The excitement that surrounds this launch comes from the genesis of the boat – which came from conversations with the many Seawind owners who were looking for something more from a 41-footer. Here is a hint of what is to come. Seawind owners love the performance of our catamarans, but our legendarily sociable sailors require space for friends, family and those you meet when cruising. The new 1260 delivers better layout options for a range of different uses through the new cockpit arrangement. Seat 8 people inside, another 8 outside – but open the doors and all can socialize together in one of the largest spaces on a boat in this size. The cockpit can dine 6, but modular cockpit seats…
Last Saturday, January 21st 2017, Outremer had the honor of receiving the “European Yacht of the Year” trophy for the third time, while at the Düsseldorf Boat Show with the Outremer 4X. This follows the Outremer 49 in 2010 and the 5X in 2012. This is the first boat in the new “racing” range to have been voted “European Yacht of the Year 2017” in the multihull category. “The Outremer 4X epitomises performance cruising and is a boat that will thrill sailors,” said Brent Vaughan of Multihull Central. “Winning this award is a fantastic achievement for Xavier and the team. It highlights the innovation being explored by this company on the up and up.” “I’m sure it won’t be long before an Aussie is cruising the world on a new Outremer 4X. We are here to help them accomplish that dream.” Outremer 4X, a…
The stability of a catamaran design has found its way into a new very practical application in the form of the yacht tender Takacat. This innovative lightweight design from New Zealand is now being represented by Multihull Central. Takacat dinghies range from 2.4m to 3.8m with either an open bow or closed tapered bow. Designed to save weight, they offer superior stability and are an affordable alternative to the regular cumbersome RIBs currently available for cruisers. With large pontoons on each side, the Takacat doesn’t lean over and become unstable like traditional dinghies. She drives well through all conditions with the floats providing the hull shape and stability. New technology in inflatable design means the lightweight floor (bridgedeck) is both firm when in use, but compact when deflated. Most noteworthy the entire boat can fit into just a couple of small bags. This makes…
