PRESS RELEASE: Seawind 1270: A Game-Changing Evolution in 40-Foot Catamarans

October 8, 2025

AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…

Sydney, Australia – 3 October 2025

The much-anticipated Seawind 1270 has officially launched, and it’s poised to revolutionize the 40-foot catamaran market. This isn’t just an incremental update—it’s a complete redesign that builds on the legendary success of the Seawind 1260 while introducing features never before seen on a Seawind of this size.

Building on a Legacy

The Seawind 1260 earned its reputation as one of the finest cruising catamarans available, winning USA Cruising World Magazine’s ‘Boat of the Year’ and ‘Best Cruising Multihull under 50ft’ in 2019. Known for its fully protected twin helms, optimized performance, and spacious living areas, the 1260 became the go-to choice for cruising couples tackling the South Pacific in a boat that could actually sail.

Now, Seawind has taken everything that made the 1260 exceptional and engineered it for the next generation.

More Than Just 100mm

Despite the modest numerical increase from 1260 to 1270, this boat features a staggering 35 design changes. The hull has grown to 42 feet—400mm longer than its predecessor—with an additional 120mm of beam bringing it to 6.95 meters. Each hull gained 60mm of beam, translating to increased buoyancy, massive interior volume gains, and improved underwing clearance of 0.85 meters.

Working with renowned Australian marine architect Stuart Bloomfield, Seawind completely reimagined the underwater shape with an optimized laminate schedule for lighter weight and better performance. The sail plan features a much larger mainsail and increased self-tacking jib, delivering the best sail area to displacement ratio in its class without requiring a cumbersome genoa.

Engineering Excellence

The 1270 introduces reverse bows that provide reserve buoyancy and power both upwind and downwind. The forebeam sits 250mm higher for superior wave clearance and features moulded carbon composite construction. Safety receives serious attention with four lifelines at 800mm high—ideal for offshore passages and accommodating taller crew members.

Perhaps most impressive is the carbon-reinforced longeron beam, providing both a removable stayless bowsprit and a permanent attachment point for a furling screecher. Flush-mount hatches and flat decks combine with a raised foredeck, while the saloon expands by 120mm in width and 180mm in length, creating interior possibilities previously unavailable in this size range.

Unprecedented Layout Flexibility

The interior innovations are equally impressive. Hull floors are now one level throughout, eliminating steps. Forward berths offer significantly increased headroom, and the aft starboard cabin features a proper double bed measuring 1.93 by 1.30 meters.

Seawind offers three distinct configurations. The traditional three-cabin galley-down layout provides arguably the largest galley of any serious cruiser in this class. But the real headline? For the first time on a Seawind of this size, a galley-up configuration is available in both three-cabin and four-cabin versions. The galley-up features a full U-shaped layout where crew can brace themselves in rough weather, plus a dedicated forward-facing nav station inspired by the larger Seawind 1370.

Smart Systems and Sustainability

The redesigned helm seats accommodate two large adults with an ice chest beneath that converts to a fridge. Standard bow seats include a side access gate for easier docking. The roof design now supports a remarkable 2.38kW of solar panels, while an extended saloon roof includes an eyebrow overhang for shading and an integrated rainwater collection system.

Starting in late 2026, all three configurations will be available with hybrid-electric propulsion, positioning the 1270 at the forefront of sustainable cruising.

Availability

The first 1270 launches in April 2026 in the galley-down configuration, with galley-up versions following in August 2026. Early buyers can take advantage of introductory discounts, and orders are already being taken.

With the 1270, Seawind completes its transition to the new generation lineup, joining the award-winning 1170 and 1370, plus the performance-oriented 1160XL. For cruisers seeking genuine sailing performance in a user-friendly, comfortable package, the Seawind 1270 delivers unprecedented value and innovation in the 40-foot catamaran market.

From America’s Cup to Catamaran Cruising: The Epic Journey of Glenn Ashby

Brent Vaughan interviews Catamaran racing legend and America’s Cup hero, Glenn Ashby about his wild achievements that led him to become the fastest sailor alive and now cruising on the cruising lifestyle on a catamaran.

Glenn Ashby’s path to becoming sailing’s fastest catamaran legend began with a childhood moment that would define his career. At just three years old, sitting on the side of his father’s Arrow catamaran, he experienced the magic of a hull lifting clear of the water—everything going quiet as the boat accelerated smoothly through the breeze. “I was like, ‘Wow, this is unbelievable,'” Ashby recalls. “I really like going fast and I love flying a hull.”

Selling a catamaran is a major decision, and getting it right can make all the difference. Success comes down to the 4 P’s — Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. Present your boat like an open home with repairs, cleaning, and styling done upfront to avoid objections. Set the right price based on actual sold-boat data, not just online listings, to capture serious buyers during the crucial first weeks. Location matters too — marinas with easy access, services, and strong buyer demand (like Sydney, Gold Coast, or Opua) can speed up sales. Finally, a strong marketing mix is essential: professional photos, online listings, social media, YouTube, eDMs, and boat shows ensure your catamaran reaches the right global audience.

Fourteen knots of boat speed closehauled, 17 on a power reach and 20+ under kite – numbers normally associated with a supermaxi like Comanche, but here we’re referring to a pocket multihull that’s 24.2m shorter and a metre narrower, even with its amas outstretched like albatross wings.

The Corsair 880 is way easier to sail and considerably cheaper, and you can forget expensive ocean deliveries, marina fees,
slipping costs and the like. Drop the rig, raise the centreboard, fold the floats to reduce beam to 2.5m, then haul the little tri onto a dual-axle alloy trailer.

Paul Hooge and his wife transitioned from life in Colorado to full-time cruising after retiring. With little sailing experience, they purchased a Seawind 1370 and decided to commission it in Thailand instead of shipping it home. With support from local expert Phil Harper, they prepared the boat and joined the Sail Malaysia Rally—a multi-month cruising event from Langkawi through Malaysia, Indonesia, and Borneo.

The rally offered a mix of structured events and independent sailing, giving them access to stunning, less-traveled places like the Anambas and Natuna Islands. Along the way, they connected with local communities, joined parades, and received warm welcomes from various ports.

Despite initial inexperience, they successfully navigated the rally with help from fellow cruisers and the Seawind 1370’s performance. Paul praised the boat’s comfort, handling, and visibility, calling the journey both challenging and unforgettable.
